Causes
• The spine is susceptible to misalignment (subluxation) caused by trauma, injury, excess of physical, emotional, and/or mental stress.
• Resulting misalignment (subluxation) may affect the nerves by irritating or applying pressure by pinching them, which leads from the spinal cord to vital organs controlling bodily functions.
• This can place extra stress on the body's systems and overall health.
• Muscles will spasm to guard or protect the area from further nerve irritation by restricting movement.
• The muscle spasm is the symptom, not the cause.
• The nerve irritation is the cause.
• Treat the cause and all the symptoms will disappear.
Only Doctors of Chiropractic are uniquely trained to locate and correct these subluxations, thus relieving the nerve inference allowing and promoting the body's ability to heal naturally. By removing subluxations your body to function as close to 100% as possible.
Some common causes for spinal misalignments and/or subluxations are:
• A difficult pregnancy or delivery at birth. This can affect the individual’s spine for the rest of their life. If the problem is not detected earlier, the spine can develop with irregular curves, scoliosis, and numerous other abnormalities.
• Poor sleeping habits
• Poor posture
• A slip and fall at any age
• Any sports injury
• A motor vehicle accident
• Acceleration-deceleration type of injury (Whiplash)
• Low velocity with a sudden impact
• Repetitive movement, usually from a work duty, that requires the use of the same body part continuously
• Congenital defects causing compensation of the spine (short leg)
• Post surgical. Spinal fusion, scar tissue, and a limited range of motion can cause many problems to the areas above and below the initial site of surgery.
• Improper bending, lifting, carrying, and/or pushing of heavy loads. Poor lifting practices can cause subluxations, ruptured discs, bulges, herniations, and disc displacement.
• Insufficient sleep or relaxation
• Stress - Not dealing with and constantly functioning at a high level of emotional stress, trauma, or anxiety is often ignored because people do not realize that it has a major affect on their lives.
• Environmental effects can cause increased stress to the body such as, pollution, smoking, heavy drinking, fast food, refined and processed foods, white flour, sodas, high quantities of caffeine, chemicals, drugs (medications), and low levels of fresh water.
